Neurodivergent Comforts

Daily writing prompt
What strategies do you use to increase comfort in your daily life?

I have a loose routine in my day to day life that I don’t like to deviate from if I can help it. I don’t leave my apartment unless I have work or an errand to run. My room is my safe space where I feel the most in control of my environment. I have my bed and desk set up just the way I like it. My turtle’s tank has it’s own white noise from the water filter which I can’t sleep without at this point. I also made sure the heat lamp uses red light at night so I don’t lose sleep.

After we moved into our apartment, I upgraded my bed from a twin to a double and got myself a memory foam mattress. It isn’t much but sleeping is a lot nicer with a super comfortable bed! I have lots of pillows and a few penguin stuffed animals on my bed as well as my rabbit stuffed animal. My pillow is also memory foam, but I’ve had it for so long that it’s chunky and distorted but it works well for me.

I always make sure to have earbuds with me so I can listen to music. At home, I have my Bluetooth headphones which block out a bit of the outside noises so my music is a bit clearer. While I am capable of multitasking, I can only do so in a specific mood. Music helps me focus my thoughts so my brain isn’t as overactive and I and get some work done. It also helps me when I’m overstimulated by controlling the sounds I’m listening to and blocking over everything else.

I keep my phone on me most of the time so I have access to music and can contact people if I need to. My girlfriend and I like to check in on each other so I can tell her when I am leaving work and so we have a general idea of what we’re doing for dinner. I feel a lot better knowing I have contact with her and my friends and overall it’s a lot more fun being able to randomly do stuff with my friends!

My water bottle can hold 32 oz of water and it has great insulation! I carry it with me everywhere so I make sure I stay hydrated! I also have lots of gum to chew on when I’m anxious or over stimulated. I have a really bad habit of chewing on my fingers and gum certainly helps me get that sensory input without messing up my fingers. There are also fidgets in my car in I’m over or understimulated! They help me focus or just vent whatever energy I have!

Being neurodivergent often leaves me struggling to deal with the world around me. It has taken me a long time to find what works best for me, but I’ve finally found a comfortable rhythm to help me focus and cope with all the stimulation the world has to offer.

  1. I am glad you have found a comfortable rhythm! I am also on the autistic spectrum so this is relatable! Thanks for sharing!
