I don’t go to a lot of live performances. I suppose the last performance I saw was a recital for the sister of the kid I work with. Her and her mother did a piece together, her mother on piano and her on violin. I don’t get a chance to go to a lot of her performances though since I watch her sister so her parents can go without disruptions. However, I do miss going to see plays. It was a lot of fun when I was in high school!
My freshman year of high school, I took tech theatre for a semester and helped build sets for upcoming plays! My favorite was “Any Number can Die.” It was a comedic murder mystery! The best part was since I’d worked on the set, I knew where the secrets were. Interestingly enough they put the panel for the hidden door upside down. I noticed immediately and asked the teacher and she just said “I don’t want to talk about it.” It wasn’t super noticeable to the audience but it was fun knowing those secrets and what the set looked like from behind. It built a love for watching theatre I didn’t know I had.
The last play I saw was on Broadway in New York! I got to see Wicked! There was a huge Girl Scout event where we got to talk to the main actors playing Elphaba and Glinda. It was more like a panel that a real conversation, but we all sang songs, asked questions, and participated in activities! Then we got to watch the actual performance and it was so cool! I’ve worked on plays in high school, but it’s nothing like professional theatre! The special effects and rigging was amazing and it was so cool watching the characters look as if they were actually flying or performing magic!
It was definitely a magical experience that I will hold in my heart for a long time. I would love to see more professional plays or get into more popular theatre someday when I have time. I’m not really a theatre kid, but I can appreciate the art!
