Writing Because I Can

What job would you do for free?

As far as typical jobs go, I wouldn’t work for free. I need to make ends meet so I’d like to get paid for my labor. However, there are a few things I actually do for free because it’s what I enjoy doing. While I’d like to be able to make money writing, it’s not the reason I write. I write because I want to share the stories fluttering in my head. Each story I hold in my mind buzzes and whispers in my ear, begging to be put on paper so it can finally go quiet and just exist. I want people to fall in love with my characters, feel unbridled rage when something goes wrong, connect with a character like them, etc. I want to break their hearts and make them hate me sometimes. I want to create something people enjoy. So, even though I don’t make anything from my writing, I still do it.

My blog is a space for me to share stories from my life and my thoughts about certain topics. I’ve also been sharing poems which are fun to write but more work than I’d expect. I do share short stories, but those are now subscriber only. I do hope to put those stories into a podcast or even just as videos on YouTube with some sort of speed draw or rough animation, I’m still learning a lot about animation so it might be a while. Subscribers just get early access. Working on YouTube and a podcast is a lot of just posting and hoping for the best. I want to share short stories of all kinds. I mostly just want people to enjoy what I have to offer. Maybe someday I could get sponsors which would help me make ends meet, but overall it’s just about sharing my passions. However, if I had someone to financially support me, I’d absolutely just write to write!

I tend to write a lot of fanfiction as well, mostly about the TMNT universe. I’ve posted on Wattpad and AO3. Wattpad only has my Sanders Sides fanfiction. Sometimes it’s nice to just write something without pressure. I can just write and post for people to enjoy and make new friends! It’s a lot of fun and I’ve made a lot of friends through fandoms who also write and draw. It’s also cool because these friends actually care about me as a writer and not just my fanfictions. Writing in a fandom is entirely for free. Yes, some become popular enough to get donations or get commissions, but overall it’s just sharing a love of a particular media.

Another job I would do for free with no chance of making money, motherhood. I want to be a mother someday and I know the sacrifices and work it takes to raise a tiny human. I’m the oldest of seven children, I had to help out a lot in watching and raising my siblings over the years. I have a lot of experience, which is what helped me get my current job. I know it’s often a thankless job, but I want to have kids. If I could, I would be a stay at home mom working on my writing and taking care of my kids. It’s a dream I hold onto and work towards. Maybe writing could take off and I’d be able to pay my bills and then I could afford to be a mother.
