Thanksgiving Outings

Daily writing prompt
Describe your most memorable vacation.

I have a lot of memories of going on vacation with my family. We used to go to the beach every year growing up. I remember a lot of bits and pieces but as I grew older I stopped enjoying the beach. As a kid, my brother and I would dig for mussels and sand crabs and store them in a bucket of sand and water until we left and we’d release them all. Nowadays, I just don’t like the sand sticking to my body and swimming in the ocean kind of always scared me. My most memorable vacations though, are much more recent.

Yes, it’s easy to remember recent vacations, but that’s not the reason they’re so memorable. Recently, I’ve been going on vacation over the summer with my friend and her family. It’s been a lot of fun to just spend time with one of my best friends and just chill and sometimes indulge in a drink. Her family sees me as one of theirs and even accepts me and my girlfriend. In fact, when I came out to them, they said they wished I told them sooner and they would have invited her too. It was a lot of fun just spending time with my second family.

However, my most memorable vacation has to be this last Thanksgiving. My family rented a beach house with my uncle and his family. I had a lot of time to just sit and draw in the main room. My uncle had brought a few board games and my brother brought one I ended up falling in love with, Nemesis Lockdown. We played about three times and I ended up finding my favorite character, the xenobiologist. After that vacation, I decided to go to my parents’ house to play the game with my brothers. We ended up getting really good at it but he got an expansion pack for Christmas that we all almost died to. Out of the five of us who played the game, only two survived. I was one of the ones to die. I also had a lot of fun playing other games like this one haunted manor game where you randomly find out who the traitor is and have to figure out how to beat them. I ended up getting the traitor one game but dinner was ready before we could finish it. By then, my character was dead, but I still had my monsters.

My anxiety was still rather high during vacation, but that’s just bad luck. My aunt was very kind of caring about how I was feeling, always checking in on me. I assured her of my needs so I could actually eat and function. She was very respectful of my boundaries. It was also great seeing my cousins again. The last time I’d seen them in person the youngest was a toddler. It’s crazy to see how much they’ve grown over the years. The oldest is the same age as my middle brother, who often calls or FaceTimes her so they can play games online together. They’ve always been close and it’s nice to see them have fun together.

My dad had also asked if I wanted to invite my girlfriend to join us. It took my dad a while to come around with the idea of me being in a lesbian relationship, but it’s nice to see him wanting to include her. She usually spent her Thanksgiving with her family though but my dad kept coming up with accommodations. In the end, we decided it was best if she didn’t come because I wasn’t sure how my uncle and his family would feel about it. My mom is only really close to a couple of her siblings and she believes both of them would be accepting. It seemed like they were pretty chill. It’s always awkward before coming out and I didn’t end up coming out then. Perhaps one day in the future I will and they can meet my girlfriend. Until then, I’m just happy to hang out with them. They’re a lot of fun and I didn’t realize how much I missed them until Thanksgiving. I hope to see them again soon.
