I have never had any major surgery before. When I was 18, I had my wisdom teeth removed, which technically counts as a type of surgery. My brother and I made a pact to record each other coming out of the anesthetic, but I didn’t do anything funny. I remember just being very tired and not being able to feel my tongue. My mom got me some soup and tried to get me to take some pain medication, but I kept spitting the water out because I couldn’t tell if it was still there.
I ended up having my first job interview the day after! My jaw was swollen and I was still a little high on pain killers. It was an interview at a large fast food chain and they didn’t seem to care that I was slurring and obviously high. I ended up working there for about 6 months before I quit. I hadn’t even submitted an application and they hired me on the spot. I was too niave to realize that was a major red flag, but my parents were insistent I get a job, so I took it.
A few days after my actual surgery, my parents went to an amusement park! I ended up getting nauseous after the third ride and just sat by the splash park and watched my siblings run around. My dad got me some ice cream to help me feel better.
My jaw was swollen for a while and it turns out I had gotten something stuck in my incision. We went back to the doctor and they cleaned it out and gave me a small kit to keep it clean. I stopped having issues after that!
