A Leaf in the Wind

He walked outside with his hands stuffed in his pockets. So this was what it was like. He sighed as he crossed the street, wet from yesterday’s rain. He tried to clear his head, but the length of his walk wasn’t doing him any good. He finally decided to rest on a park bench. He leaned his head back and stared at the pale blue sky. As he looked up, he saw a single leaf clinging onto a thin branch. He watched it flutter in the wind until it couldn’t cling to it any longer. It was tossed away in the light wind before gently landing in a puddle. He stared at the leaf. Even after it was tossed aside, it managed to float on its back in the water. Its body was curved and its long stem lifted high. It looked like a small boat.

It wasn’t until the pale blue faded to orange that he stood up and made his way home. The quiet air breathed into him ruffling his hair. Dragging his feet as he made his way back to his apartment he finally walked through the door, passing the same carpet stains. As he made his way up the stairs, he tripped on that stupid step. He pulled out his keys and unlocked the door; paint chips falling around him.

He threw his keys onto the counter. They landed on the pile of envelopes and slid onto the floor. He groaned as he reached down and picked up the mess. One envelope managed to get stuck under the peeling floor. He pulled it out slowly. It wasn’t a bill. Sitting on the floor, he tore open the envelope. He smiled. They hired him. He could finally let go of his dying tree. He could finally fly through the wind. His eviction was only temporary. He had a job now. He could move. He could hold his head up high.
