What gives you direction in life?
My writing.
I know to some it may seem strange, but my writing has always been an arrow in my life guiding me out of the darkness plaguing my own mind. I love creating and sharing stories with other people. I want to make them feel something. I want to create a character someone falls in love with in the worst way possible. I want to spark a discussion about hidden meanings or possible futures of my stories. I want to create something that rots someone’s brain in the best way possible.
In high school, I hated almost every aspect of myself, but I knew my writing was good. I worked too hard to be bad. I know I can still improve in a lot of different ways. Writing is an open field of possibilities. There’s always something to learn or experience and there are so many different styles and genres to enjoy! I’ve purchased many books on the subject and even received a few as gifts to expand my knowledge. Recently, I’ve been using a book of prompts and setting deadlines for myself to keep in practice; however, practice can only take me so far. The other books are on grammar, editing, settings, and character development. All of these are useful and have helped me shape my writing in post so I can create the best story possible.
When I was in college, I chose to major in creative writing and minor in psychology. Studying psychology is great for developing more realistic characters and maintaining their personalities and traits as the adventure continues. I like to consider myself an empathetic person which helps me gauge reactions and determine what I should say or do. It almost comes naturally for me. These skills help a lot in my work by bringing the characters in my head to life on the page. I give them passions, worries, desires, and connections. Each one of them has a small piece of myself and yet they are their own person.
I was 11-years-old when I realized my passion for writing. From then on, I focused my free time on creating worlds and characters and creatures to fill them. It wasn’t until I was 15 that I managed to finish the first draft of my first novel. I’ve spent the past eight years editing and rewriting this story to fix plot holes and add more depth with what I’ve learned. As much as I want to finish this book, I’ve spent a lot of my time focusing on a variety of writing projects to build a fan base so I can start a career in writing. It’s going to be quite a lot of time before I make it where I’d like to be, but I’m making progress every day! This is my passion in life and I know with enough hard work, I’ll achieve my dreams.
