Dogs or Cats

Daily writing prompt
Dogs or cats?

Honestly? I don’t think I can choose. Both have their pros and cons but in the end they are both great companions depending on their personailities.

Dogs are very excitable and require quite a bit of training to manage properly. They need to be trained to go outside to relieve themselves so they don’t just go in the house. It takes a lot of time and patience to properly manage a dog’s behavior. Once a dog is set in its ways, it takes a lot of time to change. For example, if a dog has a habit of jumping on people, it is going to take a while to break that habit. Their training needs to be constantly reinforced to work. However, dogs can also perform amazing tricks and even participate in shows of agility! They can perform jobs like on farms or even therapy. Dogs are also loyal and protective of their families. It depends on the breed you get, but a dog is always a wonderful companion and worth the work it takes to care for them.

Cats tend to be very indifferent. They don’t require training and also refuse to be trained. They have very low motivation, only really enjoying food and sleep and the occasional toy. It’s a lot easier to train a cat to use a litter box at a young age. Cats have a lot of different personalities which can range from sweet and cuddly to just plain mean. Outdoor cats can cause issues with the ecosystem by hunting various small animals. Indoor cats tend to live longer and mostly hunt bugs in the house. Cats make very good therapeutic companions. A cat laying on my lap or chest and purring is very calming. They also just appear in your life sometimes. They tend to be rather mischievous but also very entertaining!

Currently, my girlfriend and I own a cat named Max. He’s very smart and sweet, a wonderful and therapeutic companion! He’s recently been following me around the house and asking me for lots of snuggles! My girlfriend’s sister, who also lives with us when she’s not at school, recently got a dog! Button is still very young, about a year old, and needs a lot of training. Right now she’s very excitable and tends to jump on people a lot, which we are working on discouraging. She is rather smart and sweet but a little too young for my liking. Button is currently mostly the responsibility of my girlfriend and her sister. I am okay with the dog as long as she’s calm. Either way, we all love our animals very much and I cannot imagine a house without both a loving dog and a purring cat.

    1. There are so many animals I want to have but I also know I’m probably not ready for them! My girlfriend really wants to have a dog someday when we get our own place, but we want one that’s a little older so it’s easier to take care of.
