What is the last thing you learned?
I tend to learn new things every day. From strange facts and techniques to the people around me. Recently, I learned how to make a smoothie bowl. Our store is going to start selling smoothie bowls in April so the staff is learning how they work.
We had to complete a module online to learn how to make these smoothie bowls. The course was supposed to take only 30 minutes but it took me a little over an hour. I take a little longer in my reading if I want to actually comprehend the text. The module had a lot of repetition from the readings and the videos. I made sure to go through everything and I was so close to getting 100 on the ending quiz. If I only put a little more thought into it I would have had it, but I didn’t really think about the ingredients in each smoothie bowl since I learn that better by doing.
While talking to the manager, I realized most of my coworkers got around an 80 which means they missed 2-3 questions whereas I only missed 1. There was a total of 15 questions. I felt a little proud of myself but I can’t help looking back at my days in school.
I know my ADHD affects my learning since it takes me longer to complete some tasks than others. I also struggle finding a place to start with a project. For example, our kitchen was a disaster for weeks. Dishes were piled all over the sinks and counter, boxes of food across the counter, used pots and pans on the stove, cooking equipment littering the island. It was so overwhelming to look at that no one wanted to even start. We finally managed to start with dishes. Just loading and unloading the dishwasher. After unloading the dishwasher one day, I ended up clearing and wiping down the island since it had managed to get a little better after clearing dishes. Once I got that done, it wasn’t too much harder to just start clearing the counters. Start with the big stuff, putting away the equipment. Throw the air fryer back in the cabinet, put the toaster oven on the floor since we don’t have a place for it, put the pot back in the pressure cooker, and then throw all the dirty dishes in the dishwasher or sink. After clearing up a lot of space, it looked more manageable! I was able to put away the smaller things and finish loading the dishwasher. Since I’d just unloaded it, there weren’t as many dishes that needed washing. I finished loading the dishwasher, including a few dishes that have just been sitting on the counter for a while, and I wiped down the counters! Then I cleaned the stove and hand washed the rest of the dishes that aren’t dishwasher safe! The kitchen looked amazing! I was so proud of myself!
It takes me a lot more time to figure out how to make something work or just find a way to start on a project! Once I get into it, it’s not that hard! I can work fairly quickly depending on what it is. Getting myself in the writing mood is hard, but the actual writing isn’t! I struggled in school because a lot of times it felt so overwhelming with how much I had to do, I just couldn’t or wouldn’t do it. If I had someone by my side helping me just find a place to start, it could have been easier. I might be a grown adult, but that doesn’t mean I’m fully capable of everything every other adult is. Sometimes the hardest thing to do, is start.
