I Deserve a Chance

If there was a biography about you, what would the title be?

In high school, I dealt with a lot of issues with my mental health. Eventually, I wrote down four simple words which I repeated often to myself: I deserve a chance. I reminded myself that no matter what I struggled with or how small I thought I was, I still deserved a chance to try.

My senior year of high school, I painted a mural depicting this message. I painted a sort of butterfly with the body of an anchor. In big letters I wrote “You Deserve a Chance.” Then around it in various colors I wrote different messages. To love. To breathe. To laugh. To live. It still sits in the library at my school now.

It’s such a small phrase but it helped me get so far. I reminded myself I deserve a chance to do what I want in life! I deserve a chance to be something! I deserve a chance at love and life! I deserved to be happy. I fought hard for everything I have and to be who I am today. This is the message centering my success and it would mean the world if it was the title of my story.
